A wedding gift. A language crash course. And Quetzalcoatl working the border.
My friend Mats is marrying his Mexican spouse Wanda and flying a bunch of Europeans to Mexico for the wedding. They asked friends to each illustrate a page for a travel guide for first timers. My page was a language crash course, what to say to locals and definitely what not to say.

I took the concept and ran with it. Mats and Wanda standing at border control, being interrogated by Quetzalcoatl, the Aztec feathered serpent god of wisdom, while clutching a Duolingo book. It felt like the perfect tension between cultures, languages and the slightly terrifying experience of navigating a foreign country.
What made it hit different was when Wanda told me she saw it as an inverted reflection of what is happening in the US with ICE. I never planned that reading. But that is what happens when you put real references into your work. It takes on meaning you didn't even write into it.
It was a gift. But it was also the first time someone specifically wanted my style, not my motion design skills. That distinction matters more than any invoice.
